Women in Millwork: Meet Amber
What made you decide to go into the millwork industry?
The position fit with my background, has opportunity for growth, and is at a well-established company with the morals and culture I was looking for.
Describe a typical day on the job.
I begin the day by addressing my emails. That may include new requests, problems, shipping or tracking. I have a set schedule for updating my ROP’s and getting orders in for cubing and PO’s to the suppliers. I also maintain the glass, moldings and ROP’s for that department.
What do you love most about your job?
The work environment and people are fantastic.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Hang out with my family, cook and fish.
What are some of the challenges of working in this industry?
The work itself is challenging. Some of the specific challenges are controlling and tracking Inventory in multiple warehouses, a shortage of skilled workers (from suppliers), maintaining existing products, keeping up with new products and identifying products that are becoming obsolete.
What advice would you give to women who may be interested in joining this field?
Learn the logistics. If you do offer your assistance to others, you will learn more about the company and become better in your position. Come up with a routine that will align with your goals and help your team accomplish theirs as well.
