Off White: Adding Some Color to Your Moulding

In our last blog post, we explored accent colors that complement crisp white moulding. This time, we flip the switch and look at the impact color can have when applied to the moulding itself. Before we go any further, let’s start with some basics.

Experimenting with moulding color creates a bold focal point; so keep your walls neutral. Just like you wouldn’t clash two bold colors or contrasting patterns within the same outfit, the same rule applies to moulding and wall color. It may be even more important in your home considering it is much more difficult, costly, and time consuming to change out.

Now that we’ve set the stage, let’s get down to the fun stuff — moulding color options!

Shades of gray

Warm taupes and cool grays are great if you want to color match moulding to your interior doors. Check out these examples that were featured on Houzz. These grays are anything but dull!

These examples, also featured on Houzz, show that black moulding can actually open up a space. Additionally, it can create depth and accent architectural details such as floor patterns and windows.

Natural wood

Regardless of whether you opt for dark or light shades, or matte or glossy finishes, wood colored moulding creates a rustic look that complements modern farmhouse design. There are many creative ways to incorporate wood moulding. Wood can add architectural interest, like in this geometric design by renowned interior designer Steven Gambrel. Or, it can be used to add warmth to a picturesque reading nook, like in the example below.

Cool color

If subtle is not your design preference, then make a statement with juicy colors such as tangerine, lemon and lime. Check out the transformation of this once-outdated playroom by interior designer Bailey McCarthy. Or, dress up a simple kitchen with a pop of sunny yellow, like in the example below.
